What the record date and ex-date mean
What the record date means
The record date is the day a company checks its register of shareholders. Everyone on the register at the end of that day receives the dividend, which the company pays out on its own payment date, usually within 30 days of declaring it.
What the ex-date means
The ex-date (ex-dividend date) is the first trading day on which the share trades without the right to that dividend. Indian equities settle on T+1, so a purchase made on the ex-date reaches the register only after the record date. To be on the register you must hold the shares before the ex-date begins. Under T+1 the ex-date and the record date are usually the same day.
What happens to the price
On the ex-date the share price usually opens lower by roughly the dividend per share, because that cash is leaving the company. Holding the share across the ex-date therefore does not add value by itself, and the dividend is taxable income for the shareholder.
Interim, final and special dividends
An interim dividend is declared by the board during the financial year. A final dividend is proposed by the board after the year closes and approved by shareholders at the annual general meeting. A special dividend is a one-off payment outside the regular pattern. REITs and InvITs distribute per unit, often as a mix of dividend, interest and capital repayment; they are listed here and marked "per unit".
Highest trailing 12-month dividend as % of price
Per-share dividends with an ex-date in the 12 months to 29 Oct 2026, added up and divided by the latest closing price. A high figure usually reflects a one-off or special payout, or a share price that has fallen; it says nothing about future dividends.

Methodology
- Every cash dividend with an ex-date (interim, final and special), one row per payment. The same list feeds the Tapetide corporate-actions calendar, so a count here matches the calendar for the same dates with Dividend selected.
- Windows are by ex-date in India time and include both ends: the next 7 days and the next 30 days start today, and the past 7 days end yesterday. A company paying an interim and a special dividend on one ex-date is two dividends and one company.
- Amounts are per share as filed with the exchange. Payout % divides the amount by the latest closing price on or before 29 Oct 2026; it is left blank without a price and for REIT/InvIT units, whose distributions are per unit and not compared with per-share dividends.
- A dividend labelled neither interim nor special in its filing is counted as final.
- The 12-month table leaves out companies with a bonus issue or stock split in the period, because their earlier per-share amounts are on a different share count from today's price.
- The calendar covers companies listed on NSE since 2018 and BSE-only companies from August 2026; the NSE-filed column in the year table is the like-for-like series.
