CPI: MoSPI publishes a ready inflation figure only on its current series. For 12 earlier months on the spliced back series, the year-on-year change is derived from the published index.

WPI: MoSPI publishes no ready inflation figure for the wholesale index, so every month on this chart is a year-on-year change derived from the published index. MoSPI re-based the index in 2023; each month's change is computed within a single base, so the line is continuous while the underlying index levels are not directly comparable across the re-base.

Frequently asked questions

What is the current RBI repo rate?

The repo rate is the rate at which the Reserve Bank of India lends to commercial banks against government securities, and it is the RBI's primary policy tool for controlling inflation and liquidity. Tapetide tracks the weekly level published in RBI's Weekly Statistical Supplement and derives the change events — the first week at each new level — so you can see the full rate cycle rather than just today's number.

What is the difference between CPI and WPI inflation?

CPI (Consumer Price Index) measures the change in prices paid by households for a basket of retail goods and services, and it is the inflation measure the RBI targets under its flexible inflation-targeting framework. WPI (Wholesale Price Index) measures prices at the wholesale or producer level, before goods reach the retail consumer. WPI is more sensitive to commodity and fuel prices, so it is typically more volatile than CPI and the two can diverge sharply.

How is quarterly GDP growth calculated?

GDP growth here is the year-on-year change in real (constant-price) GDP for a given quarter versus the same quarter a year earlier. Constant prices strip out inflation, so the result reflects genuine output growth rather than price changes. The National Statistical Office does not publish a growth-rate series directly, so the figure is derived from the published constant-price levels.

What are Indias forex reserves made up of?

Indias foreign exchange reserves have four components: foreign currency assets (by far the largest, held in currencies like the US dollar, euro and yen), gold, Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) allocated by the IMF, and Indias reserve position in the IMF. RBI publishes the composition weekly in both US dollars and rupees; the rupee figure embeds the reference rate used that week.

How often is this macro data updated?

CPI and WPI are published by MoSPI around the 12th of each month, quarterly GDP by the NSO at the end of February, May, August and November, and RBI's Weekly Statistical Supplement every Friday. Tapetide re-checks all sources daily and shows the exact latest period and its age for every series, so you can see at a glance whether a number is current.

Where does this data come from?

CPI, WPI and quarterly GDP are published by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) and the National Statistical Office. The policy repo rate and foreign exchange reserves are published by the Reserve Bank of India. Every figure is reproduced as published — none of it is estimated or modelled.
