Claude for Indian Stock Research: Connect the Tapetide MCP Connector

Connect Claude.ai, Claude Desktop or Claude Code to Indian stock market data with the Tapetide MCP connector. Setup steps, a worked session and prompts.

Updated 9 October 20265 min read

Claude can research Indian stocks once you give it a data connector. On its own, Claude does not see NSE or BSE prices, filings or financials. The Tapetide MCP connector fills that gap: it gives Claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code access to more than 50 tools covering about 8,200 NSE and BSE listed companies, plus indices like Nifty 50 and Bank Nifty. This guide shows how to set up the Claude MCP stock market connector in each Claude app, walks through a real research session, and covers prompting habits and limits.

What the Claude connector for stock data gives you

The connector speaks the Model Context Protocol (MCP), the standard Claude uses to call external tools. Once connected, Claude can:

  • Find companies by name, symbol, BSE code or ISIN with search_stocks
  • Pull quotes with get_stock_quote and price history with get_price_history
  • Read quarterly and annual numbers with get_financials
  • Check ownership with get_shareholding and get_promoter_pledge
  • Summarise management commentary with get_earnings_call_summary
  • Track daily FII/DII flows with get_fii_dii_flows
  • Screen the market with screen_stocks and screen_stocks_technical
  • Read and edit your Tapetide watchlist and research portfolio

The data is aggregated from multiple licensed and public sources and structured by Tapetide. The same data powers the stock pages on the site, such as /stocks/RELIANCE.

Set up Claude.ai (web and mobile)

Claude.ai supports remote MCP connectors with Google sign-in, so there is nothing to install.

  1. Open Claude.ai and go to Settings → Connectors.
  2. Choose Add custom connector.
  3. Name it Tapetide and paste the URL https://mcp.tapetide.com/mcp.
  4. Click connect and sign in with Google.
  5. In a new chat, open the tools menu and make sure Tapetide is enabled.

The first time Claude uses each tool, it asks for approval. Research sessions touch many tools, so the prompts add up. To skip them, open the connector's settings and set the read-only tools to Always allow under Tool permissions. You may want to leave the watchlist and portfolio editing tools on ask, so Claude confirms before changing your records.

Set up Claude Desktop

Claude Desktop can use the same custom connector flow as Claude.ai when your plan supports it. If you prefer a local server, use the tapetide-mcp helper, which runs over stdio and authenticates with a personal token.

  1. Create a free token at /settings/tokens.
  2. Open Claude Desktop's config file (Settings → Developer → Edit Config).
  3. Add this entry and restart Claude Desktop:
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "tapetide": {
      "command": "bunx",
      "args": ["tapetide-mcp"],
      "env": {
        "TAPETIDE_TOKEN": "YOUR_TOKEN"
      }
    }
  }
}

The helper needs bun installed. Keep the token private; anyone with it can use your daily tool call allowance. Details are in the Claude Desktop setup guide.

Set up Claude Code

Claude Code supports remote HTTP servers directly. One command adds the connector:

claude mcp add --transport http tapetide https://mcp.tapetide.com/mcp

Start Claude Code, run /mcp, and sign in with Google when prompted. Claude Code suits stock research when you want output on disk: a CSV of screen results, a markdown note per company, or a script that reruns the same checks every quarter. See the Claude Code setup guide.

A worked research session

Here is a realistic session in Claude.ai. Each step is one prompt; Claude chooses the tools.

Step 1: Compare two banks

Compare HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank on the last 8 quarters: net interest
income, net profit, ROE, gross and net NPA. Show a table and state the
reporting period for each column.

Claude calls search_stocks to resolve both names, then get_financials for each. You get a side-by-side table. If a metric is missing, Claude should say so rather than estimate it. Ask it to if it does not.

Step 2: Check ownership and promoter pledge

For both banks, show the shareholding pattern for the last 4 quarters
(promoter, FII, DII, public) and any promoter pledge. Highlight changes
above 1 percentage point.

This uses get_shareholding and get_promoter_pledge. For banks, promoter holding and pledge are often low or nil, which is worth knowing before you apply the same check to a mid cap where pledge matters more.

Step 3: Read the earnings call summary

Summarise the latest earnings call for ICICI Bank. What did management
say about loan growth, margins and asset quality? Note the call date.

Claude calls get_earnings_call_summary and returns the key points. Follow up with "what questions did analysts push on?" to get at the parts management spent less time on.

Step 4: Add market context

How have FII and DII net flows moved over the last 20 trading days, and
how has Bank Nifty performed over the same period?

This uses get_fii_dii_flows and index tools such as get_index_performance. You can see the same flow data on the FII/DII page.

Step 5: Save what you want to track

Add both banks to my Tapetide watchlist.

Claude calls add_to_watchlist. This edits only your Tapetide research records. Nothing places orders at a broker.

Good prompting habits

A few habits make Claude's stock research more reliable:

  • Ask for observation dates. Prices, ratios and shareholding each have their own as-of date. Add "state the date of each figure" to any prompt. get_observation_status can also tell Claude how fresh a dataset is.
  • Ask which tool was used. "Which tools did you call for this?" lets you see whether a number came from the connector or from Claude's general knowledge. Anything not from a tool call deserves a second look.
  • Resolve identifiers first. Many Indian companies have similar names. Asking Claude to confirm the NSE symbol or ISIN before analysis avoids mixing up group companies.
  • Request tables. Tables make it easier to spot a wrong number than paragraphs do.
  • Keep sessions focused. One question can use several tool calls. Comparing 20 stocks across 8 quarters burns through allowance fast.
  • Name units. Say "crore" and "percentage points" so Claude does not have to guess.

Two more prompts worth keeping:

What is the Tapetide score for Tata Motors, and which components pull it
up or down? Link me to the methodology.
Is the Nifty 50 expensive or cheap versus its own history on P/E and P/B?
Give the current values, the long-run range and the observation date.

The first uses get_tapetide_score (see the score methodology). The second draws on market valuation data, also shown on the market valuation page.

Limits to keep in mind

  • Not a live feed. Quotes are the latest available prices. Financials and shareholding follow reporting periods. Index option chains are end-of-day snapshots. Do not use the connector for intraday trading decisions.
  • Tool call limits. The free plan includes 50 successful tool calls per day and up to 1,000 per month. See pricing for higher limits.
  • Claude can still make mistakes. It can misread a table, mix up periods or overstate a trend. Check important numbers on the stock page.
  • Research, not orders. Portfolio and watchlist tools edit your Tapetide records only. There is no trading capability.
  • Not advice. Claude's output is research to inform your own thinking, not a recommendation to buy or sell.

Get started

Pick your Claude app and connect: Claude.ai, Claude Desktop or Claude Code. Other clients are listed on the MCP overview. Then run the bank comparison above and see how far one conversation gets you.

Questions people ask

Can Claude access Indian stock market data?
Yes, through an MCP connector. Claude does not have built-in access to NSE or BSE data, but you can add the Tapetide connector as a custom connector in Claude.ai, as a local server in Claude Desktop, or with one command in Claude Code. Claude can then look up quotes, financials, shareholding, FII/DII flows and more for about 8,200 Indian listed companies.
How do I add a stock data connector to Claude?
In Claude.ai, open Settings, then Connectors, choose Add custom connector, name it Tapetide and paste https://mcp.tapetide.com/mcp as the URL. Sign in with Google when prompted, then enable the connector in a chat. Claude asks for approval the first time each tool runs; you can set Always allow under Tool permissions.
Is the Claude MCP stock market connector free?
There is a free plan with 50 successful tool calls per day and up to 1,000 per month. One research question may use several tool calls, for example a quote, a financials lookup and a shareholding check. Paid plans with higher limits are listed on the Tapetide pricing page. Your Claude subscription is separate.
Can I use Claude Code for stock research?
Yes. Run claude mcp add --transport http tapetide https://mcp.tapetide.com/mcp, then start Claude Code and sign in with Google when it asks. Claude Code is useful when you want research results written to files, such as a CSV of screen results or a markdown note comparing companies, alongside the usual conversational answers.
Does Claude give live share market prices for India?
No. The connector is not a live trading feed. Quotes are the latest available prices, financials and shareholding follow reporting periods, and index option chains are end-of-day snapshots. Ask Claude to include the observation date with every number so you know how current it is.

Tapetide provides research data and tools. Nothing on this page is investment advice.
