What India VIX measures

India VIX is NSE's volatility index. It is computed from the order book of Nifty 50 index options and expresses the market's expected volatility of the Nifty 50 over the next 30 calendar days, as an annualised percentage. A reading of 15 means option prices imply annualised swings of about 15% in the index.

It is not a price and it does not point up or down: it rises when option premiums rise, which usually happens when the market expects larger moves in either direction. India VIX has tended to rise when the Nifty falls sharply and to drift lower in steady markets, so it is often called a fear gauge.

History gives a reading context, not a verdict. Ranges such as "above 20" are conventions for describing elevated expected volatility, not thresholds that predict what the index does next.

Methodology

  • Daily closing values of India VIX as published by NSE, 19 Jul 2010 to 28 Oct 2026: 4,037 sessions, including special weekend sessions.
  • Percentile: the share of all stored daily closes at or below the latest one. Averages are simple means of daily closes over the trailing 1 and 5 years.
  • Highs and lows are daily closes, not intraday extremes, over the stored range only. Days above 20 and 30 count closes strictly above those levels.
  • Yearly table: the last close of each calendar year, and that year's highest, lowest and average close. 2026 is shown year to date. 2010 starts on 19 Jul 2010, so it is a partial year.
  • The chart plots the last close of each week. Updated after each trading session.

Data as of 28 Oct 2026. Historical volatility index data for research and information only. Not investment advice, and not a forecast: a percentile describes where the latest close sits among past closes, not what happens next. Markdown version.
