Option Chain Analysis with AI: Nifty, Bank Nifty and Stock Options in Claude or ChatGPT
Analyse Nifty and Bank Nifty option chains with Claude or ChatGPT: open interest, PCR, max pain, IV rank and skew from end-of-day data, with prompts to copy.
Option chain analysis with AI works by letting Claude or ChatGPT read a real option chain snapshot and summarise it: where open interest is concentrated, what the put-call ratio and max pain are, and whether implied volatility is high or low against its own history. Connect your assistant to the Tapetide MCP server and it can pull end-of-day chains for Nifty, Bank Nifty, Fin Nifty and Midcap Nifty, plus IV history for about 556 underlyings. This guide covers the options tools, a worked post-close review, prompts to copy and the limits, which matter more here than anywhere else.
The options tools
The server has 48 tools; five are built for options and volatility:
get_option_chain: end-of-day snapshot for NIFTY, BANKNIFTY, FINNIFTY and MIDCPNIFTY, with per-strike implied volatility, Greeks, bid and ask, open interest, put-call ratio and max pain. Thesnapshot_tsfield gives the observation time.get_options_analytics: latest statistics grouped by expiry, including implied volatility, realised volatility, put-call ratio, skew, open interest and max pain.get_option_iv_history: historical at-the-money implied volatility, IV rank, IV percentile, put-call ratio and max pain for about 556 underlyings, including individual stocks where available.get_india_vix: latest India VIX level, daily change and recent history.get_fii_dii_detail: institutional flows plus F&O participant positioning, useful for seeing how client, FII and proprietary positions in index futures and options have shifted.
One detail to give the assistant up front: the chain and IV-history tools report IV as a percentage (iv_pct, atm_iv_pct), while get_options_analytics returns atm_iv as a decimal fraction. A good assistant converts before comparing; asking it to is cheap insurance.
Connect
Use the setup page for your client: Claude.ai, ChatGPT, Claude Desktop or Claude Code. Claude Code is handy for options work because it can write each snapshot to a CSV, so you build your own history over time.
A worked post-close review
Run this after the market closes, when the end-of-day snapshot is available.
Step 1: Positioning at the nearest expiry
Get the latest NIFTY option chain for the nearest weekly expiry. State
the snapshot time. Show the 5 strikes with the highest call open
interest and the 5 with the highest put open interest, plus PCR and max
pain.
Tool: get_option_chain. The highest call open interest strikes are often read as resistance and the highest put strikes as support. Treat that as a description of where open positions sit, not a forecast.
Step 2: Is volatility rich or cheap?
What is NIFTY at-the-money IV now, and what are its IV rank and IV
percentile over the last year? Compare it with India VIX. Convert all IV
figures to percent.
Tools: get_option_iv_history and get_india_vix. IV rank near the top of its range means options are priced expensively against their own past; near the bottom, cheaply. That is useful context for choosing between buying and selling premium.
Step 3: Expiry-level structure
For BANKNIFTY, show each available expiry with ATM implied volatility,
realised volatility, PCR, skew and max pain. Is implied volatility above
realised volatility for the nearest expiry?
Tool: get_options_analytics. Implied above realised suggests the market is pricing more movement than has recently happened.
Step 4: Who holds what
Show F&O participant positioning for the last 10 sessions: net index
futures and index options positions for FIIs, clients and proprietary
traders. Highlight the largest change.
Tool: get_fii_dii_detail. The FII/DII guide explains cash-market flows; participant positioning is the derivatives counterpart.
Step 5: Put it together
Summarise today's NIFTY options picture in five bullet points: where
positions are concentrated, PCR, max pain, IV versus its history, and
how FII index futures positioning changed. Include the snapshot time.
No new calls are needed if the earlier answers are in the conversation.
Build your own history
Because the chain is a daily snapshot, the most valuable options data is the series of snapshots over time. Open interest building at one strike across several sessions says more than one day's reading. If you use Claude Code, ask it to save each post-close review to a dated CSV with the top open interest strikes, PCR, max pain and ATM IV. After a few weeks you can ask "how has put open interest at the nearest support strike changed this expiry cycle?" and get an answer from your own records. In a chat client, paste the previous session's summary at the start of the next one for the same effect.
Prompts for stock options
The per-strike chain covers four indices. For stocks, work with volatility history and expiry statistics:
Does RELIANCE have options IV history? If yes, show ATM IV, IV rank and
IV percentile for the last 6 months, using weekly bars if the range is
long.
Which of HDFCBANK, INFY, TCS and SBIN has the highest IV percentile
right now? Show all four with the data date.
For TATASTEEL, compare implied and realised volatility by expiry. Is the
market pricing a bigger move than the stock has made recently?
Tools: get_option_iv_history and get_options_analytics. One call to the IV history tool returns at most 400 recent bars, and longer ranges switch to weekly bars, so check bar_interval, from_date and to_date in the answer. Results-week IV spikes are common; pair the volatility check with get_stock_events to see if a board meeting is near. The board meetings page lists upcoming dates.
Common mistakes the assistant can make
- Treating missing values as zero. A strike with no IV or Greeks is unavailable data. Ask the assistant to leave such cells blank.
- Mixing IV units. Percent from the chain, decimal from analytics. "Convert to percent first" fixes it.
- Reading max pain as a target. It describes aggregate option-buyer losses at a strike. Index closes often land far from it.
- Forgetting the snapshot time. An end-of-day chain describes yesterday's close once the next session opens.
Limits
- Not a live feed. Option chains are end-of-day snapshots. Do not use them for intraday entries, exits or adjustments.
- Index chains only. Per-strike chains cover NIFTY, BANKNIFTY, FINNIFTY and MIDCPNIFTY. There is no live per-strike chain for individual stocks.
- No order placement. Nothing in the connector can place a trade.
- Free plan: 50 successful tool calls a day, no monthly cap. Higher limits are on the pricing page. TapeAi at /chat has its own separate allowance.
- Not advice. Options carry high risk, and most retail options traders lose money. Use the analysis to understand positioning, not as a signal.
