ChatGPT and the Indian Stock Market: Connect Real NSE and BSE Data
Connect ChatGPT to real NSE and BSE stock market data through a custom MCP app. Step-by-step setup, example prompts, limits and what ChatGPT cannot do.
Ask ChatGPT about the Indian stock market today and you will usually get a confident answer built on old training data or a loose web summary. Prices drift, quarterly results get missed, and FII/DII numbers are often a month out of date. The fix is to connect ChatGPT to real NSE and BSE data through an MCP app, so it fetches figures with dates instead of guessing. This guide walks through the setup, a worked session, and the limits you should know.
Why ChatGPT alone gets Indian stock data wrong
ChatGPT is a language model, not a market database. Without a data connection it has three weak spots for Indian equities:
- Stale numbers. Training data has a cutoff. A P/E ratio, promoter holding or debt figure from that snapshot can be several quarters old.
- Plausible guesses. When it does not know a small cap's ROCE, it may produce a reasonable-sounding number rather than say so.
- Thin coverage. Large caps get written about often. Most of the roughly 8,200 NSE and BSE listed companies, including SME stocks, barely appear in general text.
MCP (Model Context Protocol) solves this by letting ChatGPT call external tools during a conversation. With the Tapetide MCP app connected, ChatGPT can search companies by name, symbol, BSE code or ISIN, pull financials and shareholding, run screens over 326 fundamental ratios, and read daily FII/DII flows. It reasons over returned data rather than memory.
Connect ChatGPT to stock market data: step by step
The Tapetide server is a remote MCP endpoint at https://mcp.tapetide.com/mcp with Google sign-in. ChatGPT adds it as a custom app. The full walkthrough lives on the ChatGPT setup page.
- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings → Apps.
- Turn on Developer mode.
- Choose Create app.
- Fill in the details:
Name: Tapetide
MCP server URL: https://mcp.tapetide.com/mcp
Authentication: OAuth
- Save. ChatGPT opens a sign-in window. Sign in with Google and approve access.
- ChatGPT scans the server and lists the available tools. There are more than 50, covering search, quotes, financials, screening, technicals, options, market flows and your watchlist.
- In a new chat, open the tools or apps menu in the composer and select Tapetide so ChatGPT knows it may use it.
Workspace admin note
On ChatGPT business, enterprise or education workspaces, custom apps and Developer mode may be disabled by default. If you cannot see the option, ask your workspace admin to allow custom MCP apps for your account. Personal plans usually have the setting available directly.
Using a different assistant? The MCP overview lists setup guides for other clients, including Claude.ai and Cursor.
A worked session: three questions, real data
Here is what a short research session looks like once the app is selected. Each prompt maps to one or more tool calls.
1. FII/DII flows this month
Using Tapetide, show FII and DII net cash market flows for each trading day
this month, plus the month-to-date totals. Include the date of the latest
data point.
ChatGPT calls get_fii_dii_flows and returns a day-by-day table with net buy or sell values for both groups and a running total. If you want the derivatives split or a longer window, follow up and it will use get_fii_dii_detail. The same data is charted on the FII/DII data page if you want to cross-check.
2. Nifty option chain open interest
Get the latest Nifty 50 option chain. List the five strikes with the highest
call open interest and the five with the highest put open interest, and
compute the put-call ratio. State the snapshot date.
This uses get_option_chain, and ChatGPT may add get_options_analytics for summary measures. Remember that index option chains are end-of-day snapshots, so this tells you where positions stood at the last close, not intraday.
3. Screen for ROCE above 20%
Screen NSE stocks with ROCE above 20%, debt to equity below 0.5 and market
cap above 5,000 crore. Sort by ROCE and show the top 15 with sector and P/E.
ChatGPT calls screen_stocks, which works over 326 fundamental ratios. If it is unsure of a ratio's name, it can check get_screener_ratios first. You can then drill into any name with get_company_profile and get_financials. The visual version of this lives on the stock screener.
Prompting tips that get better answers
ChatGPT decides which tools to call based on your wording. A few habits help:
- Name the source. Start with "Using Tapetide" so it calls the app instead of browsing or answering from memory.
- Ask for dates. Add "include the observation date for every figure". This is the single most useful habit, since it makes freshness visible.
- Be specific about units and periods. "Quarterly revenue for the last 8 quarters in crore" beats "show revenue".
- Use symbols when names are ambiguous. Many Indian companies share similar names.
search_stockshandles this, but a symbol or ISIN removes doubt. - Chain steps explicitly. "Screen first, then pull shareholding for the top 5" gives ChatGPT a clear plan and keeps tool calls efficient.
- Ask it to show raw numbers before interpreting. You can check the table yourself before reading the narrative.
More prompts to try
Using Tapetide, compare promoter holding and pledged shares for TATAMOTORS
and M&M over the last 8 quarters. Flag any quarter where pledging rose.
Show the 10 biggest gainers and losers on NSE today with volume, using
Tapetide. Note the time of the latest quote.
Summarise the latest earnings call for INFY using Tapetide: guidance,
margin commentary and any risks management mentioned.
Each of these uses tools such as get_shareholding, get_promoter_pledge, scan_movers and get_earnings_call_summary. Treat all output as research material, not a recommendation to buy or sell.
What ChatGPT cannot do with this app
Setting expectations early avoids bad surprises:
- No order placement. The app does not connect to any broker. The portfolio and watchlist tools (
get_user_portfolio,get_watchlistand related ones) only read and edit your research records on Tapetide. - Not a live tick feed. Quotes are the latest available prices. Financials and shareholding update with company reporting periods. Index option chains are end-of-day. It is suitable for research and screening, not intraday execution.
- No guaranteed correctness of interpretation. The numbers come from tools, but ChatGPT's commentary is still model output. Check the figures, especially before acting on them.
- No personal advice. It can explain a ratio or a trend. It should not be your reason to buy a stock.
Free plan limits
The free plan includes 50 successful tool calls per day and up to 1,000 per month. One question can use several calls: the ROCE screen above might use one call for the screen and a few more if you ask for profiles of the results.
If you run long research sessions or automate daily checks, the pricing page lists paid plans with higher limits. For clients that need a token instead of Google sign-in, you can create one under API tokens.
Quick recap
- ChatGPT alone guesses or uses stale figures for Indian stocks.
- Add Tapetide as a custom app: Settings → Apps → Developer mode → Create app →
https://mcp.tapetide.com/mcpwith OAuth → Google sign-in. - Select the app in chat, ask for dates, and be specific.
- It is a research tool. It does not trade and it is not a live feed.
The output you get is research to inform your own judgement, not investment advice.
