# AI Portfolio Analysis for Indian Stocks: Claude and ChatGPT on Your Real Holdings

AI portfolio analysis for Indian stocks works when the assistant can read two things: your actual holdings and current data for each one. Connect Claude or ChatGPT to the [Tapetide MCP server](/mcp), keep your holdings in a Tapetide research portfolio, and the assistant can report sector weights, profit and loss, concentration, results trends and ownership changes across every stock you own. This guide shows how to load holdings, a worked review session, prompts to copy and the limits.

## What the assistant can see

Pasting a list of stocks into a chat gives the model names but no data. Over MCP, the assistant calls tools and quotes what they return. For portfolio work, the relevant tools are:

- `get_user_portfolio`: holdings, latest available prices, profit and loss, position weights and sectors
- `add_portfolio_stocks`, `update_portfolio_stock` and `remove_portfolio_stocks`: edit holdings
- `get_batch_quotes`: quotes and valuation ratios for up to 20 stocks in one call
- `get_financials`, `get_shareholding`, `get_promoter_pledge` and `get_earnings_call_summary`: per-holding research
- `get_stock_events`: news, corporate actions and filings per company

The server has 48 tools in total, over about 8,000 NSE and BSE listed companies.

## Step 1: Connect your assistant

Pick your client and follow its setup page: [Claude.ai](/mcp/claude-ai), [ChatGPT](/mcp/chatgpt), [Claude Desktop](/mcp/claude-desktop) or [Claude Code](/mcp/claude-code). Sign in with the same Google account you use on Tapetide, because portfolio tools act on the connected account.

## Step 2: Load your holdings

You have three options:

1. **Import a CSV.** Download a holdings statement from your broker and upload it on the [portfolio page](/portfolio). If the format is not recognised yet, the page keeps the file and lets you tell us the broker.
2. **Add by hand** on the same page.
3. **Ask the assistant.** For a short list this is quickest:

```text
Add these to my Tapetide portfolio: 40 HDFCBANK at 1,520, 25 TCS at
3,410, 60 ITC at 412 and 15 LT at 3,280. Show me what you are about to
add before you add it.
```

The assistant resolves each symbol with `search_stocks` and calls `add_portfolio_stocks`. Asking it to confirm first is worth the extra turn: the tool merges with existing holdings at a quantity-weighted average price, so a mistyped quantity changes your cost basis.

## Step 3: A worked portfolio review

### Overview

```text
Read my Tapetide portfolio. Show each holding with quantity, average
price, latest price, P&L in rupees and percent, and weight. Then give
sector weights and the date of the prices used.
```

One call to `get_user_portfolio` covers this. The answer should state the price date, because prices are the latest available, not live ticks.

### Concentration check

```text
Which holdings are more than 10% of the portfolio, and which sectors are
more than 25%? If I wanted no stock above 10%, how many rupees would I
need to trim from each?
```

This is arithmetic on the data from the previous step, so it should use no new tool calls. If the assistant calls the tool again, that is fine but uses allowance.

### Valuation across holdings

```text
For every holding, show P/E, P/B, ROE and dividend yield in one table,
using the latest available values. Flag any stock with P/E above 50 or
ROE below 10%.
```

`get_batch_quotes` returns valuation ratios for up to 20 stocks per call, so a 15-stock portfolio costs one call here instead of fifteen.

### Results trend per holding

```text
For each holding, did revenue and net profit grow year on year in the
latest reported quarter? One row per stock, with the quarter named.
```

This calls `get_financials` once per stock. For a large portfolio, ask for the five biggest positions first.

### Ownership and red flags

```text
For my holdings, list any where promoter holding fell more than 1
percentage point over the last 4 quarters, any with promoter pledge
above 5%, and any credit rating downgrades in the last year.
```

Tools: `get_shareholding`, `get_promoter_pledge` and `get_credit_ratings`. This is the check most retail investors skip, and it is cheap to run quarterly.

### What changed this week

```text
For my top 5 holdings, list news, corporate actions and filings from the
last 7 days with dates.
```

Tools: `get_stock_events`. Pair it with the [corporate actions page](/corporate-actions) for record dates.

## More prompts for portfolio analysis

```text
Which of my holdings are within 10% of their 52-week high, and which are
more than 30% below it? Show the price date.
```

```text
Which of my holdings have an earnings call summary from the latest
quarter? Give me the one-line guidance from each.
```

```text
Show the Tapetide Score for each holding with its band and data
confidence, sorted lowest first.
```

```text
I sold 20 ITC today at 430. Update my portfolio and show the new
quantity and average price.
```

The third prompt uses `get_tapetide_score`; the method is on the [score methodology page](/score/methodology). The last one calls `update_portfolio_stock` or `remove_portfolio_stocks`. Selling does not change your average buy price, so the assistant should keep it and only reduce the quantity; check that it did.

## A quarterly review routine

The most useful AI portfolio review is a repeatable one. After each results season, run the same five steps in order: overview, concentration, valuation, results trend and ownership. Keep the answers. Next quarter, paste last quarter's summary into the chat and ask "what changed?" The assistant can then point to the holdings whose results slowed, whose promoters sold or whose weight drifted above your limit, which is where your attention belongs.

In Claude Code, ask for each review as a dated markdown file so the history sits in a folder you control. In Claude.ai or ChatGPT, a project or pinned chat keeps the prompts handy. Either way, the routine matters more than any single clever prompt.

## Keep it honest

A few points stop an AI portfolio review from misleading you:

- **The portfolio is a record, not a broker sync.** It reflects what you loaded. After you trade, update it, or the analysis describes a portfolio you no longer hold.
- **Ask for dates.** Prices, results and shareholding update on different schedules. "State the date of each figure" belongs in every portfolio prompt.
- **P&L excludes dividends and charges.** The profit and loss figure is price against your average cost. It does not include dividends received, brokerage or taxes.
- **Arithmetic can still slip.** Models occasionally mis-add weights. Ask for totals and check they sum to 100%.

## Limits

- **Not a live trading feed.** Prices are the latest available, not tick by tick.
- **Free plan:** 50 successful tool calls a day, no monthly cap. Failed calls do not count. Higher limits are on the [pricing page](/pricing).
- **No trading.** Portfolio and watchlist tools edit Tapetide records only.
- **TapeAi is separate.** Tapetide's own assistant at [/chat](/chat) has its own allowance and does not use your MCP calls.
- **Not advice.** Tapetide is not a SEBI-registered investment adviser. Use the review to ask better questions about your holdings, not to outsource the decision.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can ChatGPT or Claude analyse my Indian stock portfolio?

Yes, if they can read your holdings and current data. With the Tapetide MCP connector, your holdings live in your Tapetide research portfolio, and the assistant reads them with get_user_portfolio, which returns quantities, latest available prices, profit and loss, position weights and sectors. It can then pull financials and ownership for each holding.

### How do I get my holdings into the AI?

Three ways. Import a holdings CSV from your broker on the Tapetide portfolio page, add holdings by hand on that page, or ask the assistant to add them for you, which calls add_portfolio_stocks. Existing holdings merge using a quantity-weighted average price, so check the result before you rely on it.

### Does the AI connect to my broker or place trades?

No. The portfolio tools only read and edit your Tapetide research records. There is no broker connection over MCP and nothing can place, modify or cancel an order. That also means the Tapetide portfolio does not update itself when you trade; update it after you buy or sell.

### Is AI portfolio analysis free?

The Tapetide MCP free plan includes 50 successful tool calls a day, with no monthly cap. A portfolio review uses one call to read holdings and more for each stock you dig into, so a 15-stock review fits if you batch quotes with get_batch_quotes. Your Claude or ChatGPT plan is separate.

### Is it safe to share my portfolio with an AI assistant?

Your holdings are sent to the AI provider as part of the conversation when the assistant reads them, so the provider's data policy applies. Tapetide stores the portfolio in your account and only the account you connected can read it. If that is a concern, use symbols and weights without quantities.
